On May 26, the Kyrgyz Republic closed its border with Uzbekistan due to shootings and explosions in Khanabad on the Uzbek side. The number of casualties is still unclear but some reports even claim that up to 16 persons were killed in the incident. Bishkek reinforced its southern border after tanks appeared on the streets of Khanabad. Uzbekistan, for its part, is currently digging a 3-meter wide “anti-tank” trench at parts of its border with the Kyrgyz Republic. A few days later a suicide-bomber detonated an explosion in Andijan killing at least one person.
