Energy or values? EU’s Central Asia dilemma discussed at Polish forum

Two conclusions on the relationship between the EU and Central Asia were reached at the 19th Economic Forum in the Polish ski resort of Krynica this week. First of all, EU’s dependence on energy imports makes energy rich Central Asia an important focus for future relations. Second, the EU, despite its interest in the region’s natural resources, must uphold democratic standards and push for reforms and respect for human rights in Central Asia. Many participants argued for the necessity of the EU to find a clear balance when addressing these questions. (RFE/RL)
